Family Favorite Chocolate Fudge recipe
Guess it is finally time to make fudge! It’s hard for me to wait any longer! This is my family’s favorite chocolate fudge. I’ve made it every single year since my mom taught me as a little girl, and I’m 72 years old now! She used to have me help break up the candy bars and would dare me to eat a bite!
Back in the day, we used two big Hershey bars that amounted to a little over 9 ounces, so it took two. Today, those bars have been cut way down, so I discovered I could get two packages of the regular-sized ones, and it’s just right! This candy is a bit expensive to make, but it yields 4 pounds, and for us, it’s worth it!
Where I grew up, in Maryville, TN, there was a lady named Mary Star who had her own cooking show on Knoxville channels. We watched her every morning. This is her recipe. It didn’t make it into her cookbook, but I’ve used her book so much that it’s almost worn out!
Ingredients:
- 4 1/2 cups sugar
- 14 1/2 ounces evaporated milk (back then, a can, but now it’s only 12 ounces, so add a little from another can)
- 19 ounces Hershey candy bars, broken up
- 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 8-10 ounces marshmallow crème (marshmallow crème used to be 8 ounces, but now it’s 7 ounces)
- Optional: Black walnuts (delicious, but my family doesn’t like nuts, so I leave them out)
Instructions:
- In a large heavy saucepan, combine the sugar and evaporated milk.
- Bring to a boil, stirring constantly for 6-7 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, prepare the chocolate mixture by placing the broken-up Hershey bars, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and marshmallow crème.
- Once the milk mixture is ready, pour it over the chocolate mixture in the mixing bowl and stir until well combined.
- Pour the mixture into a slightly greased 9×13 pan and let it cool completely.
- Once cooled, slice and enjoy!
This recipe calls for black walnuts, which are absolutely delicious, but since my family doesn’t like nuts, I leave them out.
