Old-Fashioned Blackberry Dumplings

Ingredients
  

  • For the Berries:
  • Fresh blackberries any amount
  • Sugar half the amount of berries
  • Water to cover berries by 1 inch
  • For the Dumplings:
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • ¼ cup shortening
  • ¾ cup milk

Instructions
 

  • Add berries, sugar, and water to cast iron pot. Bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes.
  • Mix flour, shortening, and milk to form dumpling dough.
  • Drop dough onto simmering berries.
  • Cook uncovered 10 minutes, then covered 10 more minutes.
  • Add water if berries thicken too much.
  • Serve warm, topped with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Use frozen berries if needed.
For thicker syrup, simmer uncovered longer.
Add lemon zest for brightness.
