Cast Iron Recipe: Fluffy Biscuits, Sausage Gravy, Home Fries, Dippy Egg
Yummy supper on this cold evening… fixed everything in or on cast iron. 👍🏼
For my biscuits…this honestly, makes the lightest and fluffiest biscuits.
Ingredients:
- 2 C all-purpose flour
- 1 TBS baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 TBS white sugar
- 1/3 C shortening
- 1 C milk
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 425.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually stir in milk until dough pulls away from the side of the bowl.
- Turn out onto a floured surface and knead just a few times.
- Pat or roll out to about 1″ thick.
- Cut biscuits with a large cutter or glass dipped in flour and place on an ungreased cookie sheet (a small cast iron skillet can also be used).
- Bake for 13-15 minutes in the preheated oven or until edges begin to brown.
- Brush tops with butter.
Additional components:
Sausage Gravy:
- Fry bulk sausage with a little bacon grease until browned.
- Sprinkle flour over it, stirring until blended well.
- Add milk slowly while stirring until desired thickness is achieved.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Home Fries:
- Dice potatoes and add a little onion.
- Fry in a little bacon grease until cooked and golden brown.
Dippy (Over Easy) Egg:
- Fry the egg on a cast iron flat top or skillet.
Serve the biscuits topped with sausage gravy, alongside home fries and a dippy egg. Enjoy with a mug of hot sweet tea. Sure tasted good.
