Easy Biscuit Bread Recipe (Southern Skillet Pone Bread)

Ingredients
  

  • - 2 cups self-rising flour sifted, optional
  • - ¼ cup melted lard or shortening
  • - 1½ cups buttermilk

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Heat a tablespoon of lard in a 9-10 inch cast iron skillet in the oven.
  • Mix flour, melted lard, and buttermilk to make a thick batter.
  • Carefully pour batter into the hot skillet; it should sizzle.
  • Bake 30 minutes until golden brown.
  • Turn bread onto a plate, slice, and serve warm.

Notes

- For lighter texture, sift flour first.
- Butter or shortening can substitute lard.
