Great Grandma Keka’s Traditional Fry Bread

Fry Bread recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of Blue Bird Flour
  • 4 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 Tablespoons of lard
  • 2/3 cup warm water
  • Oil or lard for frying

Instructions:

  1. Combine dry ingredients, hand cut in lard, add water make a workable soft dough, cover let rest for 20 minutes.
  2. Tear into small fist size balls roll about 1/4” to 1/2” circle. My gram never rolled; she always flipped the dough back & forth on her hands. I’m not that coordinated, LOL. They are more tender this way; rolling makes the dough a little tough. Some people poke a hole in the center; I don’t.
  3. Fry until golden brown.
  4. Place on paper towels to absorb oil.

Serving Suggestions:

I use in place of tortillas or bread when we eat beans, can be used for Indian Tacos or dessert. Put honey on top.
