pear salad recipe

This is pear salad. A southern staple.

When I get a craving for something my Mama and Grandmama used to make, I can’t wait to taste it again. Did anyone else grow up eating fruit salads made with canned Bartlett pears or a ring of canned pineapple? We thought we were eating”fancy” when we ate pear salad.

Ingredients:

  • Tinned pineapple rings or Bartlett pears
  • Duke’s mayo (suggested)
  • Juice from the canned fruit
  • Shredded cheese
  • Maraschino cherries

Instructions:

  1. Set a ring of canned pineapple or canned Bartlett pears on a platter.
  2. For the dressing, whisk mayo and a tiny bit of the canned fruit juice in a small bowl.
  3. Dollop the fruit with the dressing.
  4. Over it, scatter grated cheese.
  5. Dot with a maraschino cherry.
