Long Beach, California School District Pizza

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • 1/8 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3/4 cup tomato puree
  • 3/4 cup diced canned tomatoes
  • 1 (1-pound) package biscuit mix
  • 1/2 pound Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 pound mozzarella cheese, shredded

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce:
    • Strain fat from browned ground beef.
    • Add flour and whisk in sugar, oregano, salt, and pepper to taste.
    • Simmer until flavors are integrated.
    • Add tomato puree and diced canned tomatoes. Cook until heated through.
  2. Make the Crust:
    • Prepare the biscuit mix as directed to make the crust.
    • Roll the dough into an 18 by 12 inch rectangle.
    • To transfer the dough onto a baking pan easily, wrap it around a rolling pin and carefully place it onto the pan.
    • Trim off the corners by rolling a rolling pin over the edges of the pan.
    • Prick the dough numerous times with a fork.
  3. Bake the Crust:
    • Bake the prepared crust for 15 minutes at 450 degrees Fahrenheit, or until lightly browned.
  4. Assemble and Bake the Pizza:
    • Just before serving, spread the hot meat sauce over the baked crust.
    • Scatter shredded Cheddar and mozzarella cheeses evenly over the meat sauce.
    • Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until the cheese is melted and the sauce is heated through.
  5. Serve:
    • Cut into slices and serve hot.
