Yeast Rolls

Homemade Dinner Rolls (Yeast Rolls)

I tried my hand at homemade dinner rolls (yeast rolls) last night for the first time. They turned out so pretty and tasted yummy! This Ky girl is finally getting the hang of making breads. Next up is sourdough I think, if I ever figure out the starter.

Yeast Rolls Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 packets active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm water
  • 1½ cups milk
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 6 cups bread flour (I used White Lily)
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • Non-stick cooking spray

Instructions:

  1. Stir yeast into warm water in a large bowl. Let stand 5 min.
  2. Microwave milk, sugar, shortening, and salt in a microwave-safe bowl for about 1 min. (shortening doesn’t have to be melted). Add to yeast mixture.
  3. Beat 3 cups flour and egg with mixer on low until smooth. Stir in enough flour to make a very soft dough.
  4. Knead on lightly floured surface, adding additional flour as needed until dough is smooth and elastic. About 5 min.
  5. Coat a large bowl with oil. Place dough in bowl. Cover loosely with plastic wrap or towel. Let rise in a warm place until doubled in size. About 45 min.
  6. Coat baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Grab pieces of dough and form balls and place side by side. This makes about 30 rolls. Cover and let rise an additional 30 min or until doubled in size.
