Classic West Virginia Hot Dog

Ingredients:

  • Mustard
  • Sliced onion
  • Chili sauce prepared from scratch
  • Slaw (cole slaw)

Instructions:

  1. Make a traditional West Virginia hot dog by serving the hot dog with all of the toppings, including mustard, sliced onion, chili sauce, and slaw.

For the sides:

  • Grilled corn on the cob
  • Tomato slices with cottage cheese
  • Enjoy some sweet tea.

To make the slaw dressing:

Ingredients:

  • Mayonnaise (Hellmans)
  • Vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Celery

Instructions:

  1. Mix together the mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, and celery to make the slaw dressing.
  2. Combine the items to your liking without measuring.

For the chili sauce on hot dogs:

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 pounds ground beef, lean
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Crushed red pepper flakes to taste

Instructions:

  1. Cut the following recipe in half and store the leftovers in the freezer.
  2. In a Dutch oven over medium heat, crumble the ground meat.
  3. Add the water and firmly mash the ground beef with a potato masher.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine tomato sauce, ketchup, salt, pepper, sugar, and chili powder.
  5. Bring the ingredients to a boil.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 60 to 90 minutes, or until it reaches a medium consistency that is not too soupy.
