Easy Pone of Cornbread Family Recipe

My First Pone of Cornbread: A Simple and Delicious Recipe

This is the recipe and exactly what I do! And I don’t really measure anything 😊
For this little Pone, I used

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups of SR yellow cornmeal
  • 1 tablespoon of SR flour
  • 1 egg
  • About 1/2 to 1 cup of whole milk or buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of bacon grease (or your preferred fat)

Instructions:

  • Heat the oven to 400°F.
  • In a pan, add one and a half tablespoons of pork grease or any other fat you like. Let it melt,
  • then add a little to your batter. The batter should not be as thick as pancake batter.
  • Place the batter in the pan and bake for 15 to 18 minutes.
  • White Lily flour and cornmeal work best for me.

FAQ

Q: Why is it called a “pone” of cornbread?
A: Truthfully, I don’t know! My family always said “I’m making a pone of cornbread,” so that’s what I say too.
My guess is it’s a small loaf.

Q: If you add an egg, don’t you need flour?
A: I add the flour so it’s not so gritty. It’s just the way we like it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Q: How did you get it so thick?
A: Buttermilk will also help it rise. It’s a great way to get that nice, thick texture.

Q: Is your countertop wood?
A: It’s acacia butcher block!
