Christmas Party Menu Ideas & 4 Festive Cocktail Recipes (Crowd-Pleasers!)

There is something just magical about a house full of people during the holidays, isn’t there? The sound of laughter bouncing off the walls, the smell of savory appetizers drifting from the kitchen, and that sparkle of Christmas lights reflecting in everyone’s glasses.
Last night, we hosted our 11th Annual Christmas Party, and my heart is just so full. We had about 30 guests come through, and it was a night to remember. If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know I love a good old-fashioned gathering. But let’s be real—feeding and watering 30 people is no small feat!
Over the years, I’ve learned that the secret to a stress-free party is a mix of homemade love and a little bit of help where you can get it. This year, I focused my energy on the fun stuff—making the desserts and playing bartender with a festive cocktail menu—and I hired a wonderful mother-daughter catering team to handle the heavy lifting for dinner. Best decision ever.
If you are looking for Christmas party menu ideas or just need a few signature drinks to make your holiday get-together sparkle, I’m sharing everything we served last night, including the recipes for my four signature cocktails: the Jack Frost, the Christmas Margarita, the Peppermint Spritzer, and a Peppermint Bark RumChata.
Why You’ll Love This Party Menu
-
It’s Tried and True: This isn’t a theoretical menu; this is exactly what 30 real people ate and loved last night!
-
Balance of Flavors: We had everything from savory steak to sweet peppermint bark, ensuring every palate was happy.
-
Scalable: Whether you are hosting 10 people or 50, these cocktail recipes and menu ideas are easily doubled or tripled.
-
The “Wow” Factor: The drink station, with its sugared rims and colorful glassware, serves as decor all on its own.
The Appetizer Spread
We started the night with a mix of comfort food classics and elegant bites. I think appetizers are crucial because they get people mingling before the main event.
-
Stuffed Mushrooms: Earthy, savory, and perfectly bite-sized.
-
Spinach Artichoke Dip on Crostini: Creamy, cheesy goodness on a crunchy toast. You really can’t go wrong here.
-
Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup Shooters: These were a huge hit! There is something so nostalgic about tomato soup and grilled cheese, and serving them in little shooter glasses makes them party-friendly and adorable.
If you are looking for another easy appetizer to add to your rotation, you might want to try my cream cheese sausage balls recipe —they are a Southern staple that vanishes off the plate in minutes.
The Main Course: Dinner for 30
For the main meal, having the caterers take over was a lifesaver. It allowed me to actually talk to my guests instead of being stuck over the stove! Here is the menu that kept everyone full and happy:
-
Flank Steak with Chimichurri: Tender beef with that bright, garlicky herb sauce.
-
Chicken Piccata: Lemony, caper-y perfection.
-
Gouda Mac n Cheese: This was the ultimate comfort side dish. Smoky Gouda makes such a difference.
-
Mixed Veggies: To balance out the richness.
-
Salad & Rolls: Essential for soaking up those delicious sauces.
The Sweetest Ending: Dessert
I took the reins back for dessert! I set up a tiered tray that looked just as festive as the tree. We had a Chocolate Cake, a creamy Cheesecake, and of course, a classic Pecan Pie. If you need a foolproof recipe for the holidays, my no corn syrup pecan pie delivers that perfect custard texture without being overly cloying.

We also served Christmas Cookie Ice Cream, which was a fun twist! Speaking of cookies, looking at the photos, I’m reminded of how much fun it is to plate everything up nicely. I used my tiered stands to display strawberries filled with cream, chocolate bark, and dipped sandwich cookies.

And we can’t forget the cornflake wreaths! Those green, crunchy treats (pictured above with my baking Santa!) are such a throwback. If you want more crunchy, sweet snack ideas, you should check out my Christmas Crack recipe —it’s another one that people can’t stop munching on.
The Star of the Show: The Holiday Cocktail Menu
Okay, let’s get to the fun part—the drinks! 🥂
I set up a dedicated cocktail station with pre-rimmed glasses and cute handwritten signs. It made the bar area feel organized and special. Here are the four signature cocktails I made.

1. The Jack Frost
This was the stunning blue drink you see in the martini glasses. It looks like winter in a glass!
-
Ingredients: Pineapple Juice, White Rum, Blue Curaçao, Cream of Coconut.
-
The Rim: I dipped the rim in a little corn syrup or honey and then into shredded coconut to look like snow.
-
Taste: Tropical but wintery. It’s like a Piña Colada put on a winter coat.
2. The Christmas Margarita
You can’t have a party without a margarita, right? This one uses cranberry to give it that deep red holiday color.
-
Ingredients: Tequila, Cranberry Juice, Triple Sec, Fresh Lime Juice.
-
The Rim: Colored red and green sanding sugar.
-
Taste: Tart, refreshing, and definitely strong enough to get the carols started!
3. The Peppermint Spritzer
For something bubbly and light, this was the winner. It’s elegant and served in a champagne flute.
-
Ingredients: Sparkling Wine (Prosecco or Champagne), Lemon-Lime Soda (like Sprite or 7Up), a drop of Peppermint Extract, Lime Juice.
-
The Garnish: Crushed peppermint candy on the rim or a mini candy cane hanging off the side.
-
Taste: Crisp and bubbly with just a hint of mint. Be careful with the peppermint extract—a little drop goes a very long way!
4. Peppermint Bark RumChata
This was our “dessert in a cup” drink.
-
Ingredients: RumChata, Chocolate Liqueur, Cream (optional).
-
Serve: Over ice with a chocolate drizzle inside the glass.
Expert Tips for a Smooth Cocktail Station
Prep Your Rims in Advance The sticky rims (coconut, sugar, peppermint) can be done 30 minutes before guests arrive. The sugar will harden slightly, which actually helps it stay on the glass better when you pour.
Batching for a Crowd Since we had 30 guests, I didn’t want to be shaking individual shakers all night.
-
Pitcher Method: You can mix the Jack Frost and the Christmas Margarita in large pitchers ahead of time. Just leave out the ice so it doesn’t water down. Pour over ice when serving!
-
Spritzers: These must be made fresh because of the bubbles in the sparkling wine and soda.
The Ice Matters I bought a bag of “good ice” (the clear, cylinder kind or the nuggets) rather than using cloudy freezer ice. It makes the clear drinks like the Spritzer look much more elegant.
Label Everything As you can see in my photo, I used little scalloped cards to label the drinks. This helps guests choose what they want without having to ask you every 5 minutes, “What’s in the blue one?”
Variations & Non-Alcoholic Options
Not everyone drinks, and that’s perfectly fine!
-
Virgin Jack Frost: Use pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and blue Gatorade (Frost flavor) or a drop of blue food coloring instead of the liqueurs.
-
Mocktail Margarita: Cranberry juice, lime juice, orange juice, and a splash of club soda.
-
Kiddie Spritzer: Lemon-lime soda with a drop of peppermint extract and a candy cane.
Storing Leftovers
If you have leftover Chocolate Cake (which is rare!), simply cover it tightly. If you are looking for a great chocolate cake recipe to use next time, Janie’s classic chocolate cake is moist and delicious.
Leftover cocktail mix (without ice/soda) can be stored in a mason jar in the fridge for 2-3 days. The Jack Frost actually tastes even better after the flavors meld for a day!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use vodka instead of rum for the Jack Frost? Absolutely. If you aren’t a rum fan, vodka or even coconut rum (like Malibu) works beautifully.
Where do I find Blue Curaçao? It’s usually in the cordial section of the liquor store. It’s an orange-flavored liqueur that happens to be bright blue.
How much peppermint extract do I use? Use an eyedropper if you have one! Seriously, start with one single drop per glass. It is very potent and can taste like toothpaste if you overdo it.
Final Thoughts on Our 11th Annual Party
Looking back at the photos, I wish I had taken pictures of everything, especially that Gouda Mac n Cheese! But honestly, sometimes being a bad photographer means you were a great host—too busy enjoying the moment to snap a pic.
I hope these menu ideas and drink recipes help you plan your own festive gathering. Whether it’s your 1st annual party or your 50th, the most important thing is the people in the room.
